Usher/Admin Assistant – Huddersfield Magistrates’ Court

HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is seeking a dedicated and professional Usher/Admin Assistant to join the team at Huddersfield Magistrates’ Court. This dual-function role is essential to the smooth operation of the justice system, serving as the face of the court for the public while providing critical administrative support behind the scenes. If you are a calm, organized individual who takes pride in helping others navigate potentially stressful environments, this role offers a career with a real sense of purpose.

Your Role: The Bridge Between Public and Judiciary

As an Usher, you are often the first point of contact for court users. You will facilitate the daily movement of people within the building and ensure the judiciary has everything they need for proceedings. When not in the courtroom, you will transition into an Administrative Assistant role, handling the documentation and clerical tasks that keep the legal process moving.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Court User Support: Meeting and greeting members of the public, legal representatives, and vulnerable witnesses, providing reassurance and clear directions.

  • Judicial Assistance: Preparing hearing rooms, swearing in witnesses, and ensuring that all necessary parties are present for each case.

  • Administrative Tasks: Completing court documentation accurately, performing general clerical work, and using IT systems to record outcomes.

  • Efficiency: Monitoring the flow of hearings to maximize the court’s time and handling challenging situations with professionalism.

  • Inter-Court Support: While based in Huddersfield, you may occasionally travel to other courts across West Yorkshire to provide cover.

Your Skills and Experience

HMCTS is looking for individuals who can balance technical accuracy with high-level empathy.

  • Communication: A friendly, approachable manner with the confidence to address court users clearly.

  • Organization: The ability to multi-task and prioritize your own workload between ushering and admin duties.

  • IT Proficiency: Comfortable learning new software and maintaining high attention to detail in digital documentation.

  • Resilience: The ability to remain calm and professional in an environment that can sometimes be emotionally charged or challenging.

Selection Process: Success Profiles

The recruitment process will assess you against the following Civil Service Behaviours:

  1. Communicating and Influencing: Sharing information effectively and addressing others with confidence.

  2. Managing a Quality Service: Delivering a professional, timely, and accurate service to all court users.

Your CV should clearly detail your current duties and responsibilities to demonstrate your relevant experience.

Salary, Benefits & Working Patterns

  • Salary: £23,583 per annum.

  • Pension: Access to the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension (Employer contribution of 28.97%, approximately £6,831).

  • Working Hours: 37 hours per week (Full-time).

  • Flexible Options: Part-time is considered (minimum 25 hours), but must include Mondays and full working days.
