Junior Clinical Fellow: Trauma & Orthopaedics (12 Months)

University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dedicated Junior Clinical Fellow (SHO level) to join the Trauma & Orthopaedics department in Brighton. Based primarily at the Princess Royal Hospital, this 12-month post is specifically designed for doctors looking to bolster their surgical portfolio before applying for a Core Surgical Training (CST) programme. You will gain hands-on experience in a high-volume surgical environment while receiving the mentorship needed to progress in a surgical career.


Core Requirements and Skills

  • Full GMC Registration with a license to practice (Essential).

  • Primary Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent).

  • Clinical Competence: Ability to manage the day-to-day care of orthopaedic inpatients, including ward rounds and acute admissions.

  • Surgical Interest: A clear commitment to pursuing a career in surgery, specifically Trauma & Orthopaedics.

  • Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills for liaising with multidisciplinary teams, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and senior surgical staff.


Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical Care: Deliver high-quality daily care for patients on the orthopaedic wards at Princess Royal Hospital.

  • Theatre & Clinics: Attend regular theatre sessions to assist in elective and trauma cases and participate in outpatient clinics to develop diagnostic skills.

  • On-Call Duties: Participate in the junior doctor on-call rota for trauma admissions and inpatient emergencies.

  • Portfolio Development: Actively participate in Quality Improvement Projects (QIPs), clinical audits, and departmental teaching.

  • Team Support: Provide clinical support to senior medical staff and contribute to the smooth running of the surgical firm.
