-
Location: Various schools across Leicester & Leicestershire
-
Pay: Competitive daily rates (Typically based on the Main Pay Scale (MPS), ranging from £120 to £210 per day depending on experience and the nature of the booking).
The Role & Flexibility
This is a recruitment agency model where you act as an external educator filling in for permanent staff. You have total control over your schedule:
-
Booking Types: Advanced bookings (planned absences), on-the-day emergency cover, and long-term placements.
-
Year Groups: Opportunities across EYFS (Nursery/Reception), KS1 (Years 1-2), and KS2 (Years 3-6).
-
Workload: You can choose to work anywhere from 1 to 5 days per week.
Key Responsibilities
-
Lesson Delivery: Delivering pre-planned lessons provided by the class teacher or, in some cases, “emergency” lessons you bring yourself.
-
Classroom Management: Maintaining a positive learning environment and following the specific behaviour policies of each school.
-
Marking: Ensuring all work completed during the day is marked according to the school’s marking policy before you leave.
-
Safeguarding: Upholding the highest standards of child protection and reporting any concerns to the school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
Candidate Requirements
Essential Qualifications
-
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS): You must be a fully qualified teacher. (Early Career Teachers (ECTs) are also usually welcome).
-
DBS: An enhanced DBS on the Update Service is mandatory for all supply roles.
Skills & Attributes
-
Adaptability: The ability to walk into a new classroom and build rapport with students instantly.
-
Curriculum Knowledge: A solid understanding of the National Curriculum for the specific Key Stage you are covering.
-
Reliability: Being punctual and professional, as your performance directly affects your future bookings with specific schools.
Perks of Supply Teaching
-
No “Take-Home” Work: Unlike permanent roles, you generally do not have to attend staff meetings, perform data tracking, or do long-term planning.
-
Variety: Experience a wide range of school cultures, from small village schools to large inner-city academies in Leicester.
-
Networking: Excellent way to “shop around” for a permanent role if you are looking to settle in a specific school later.
Summary of the Opportunity
This role is ideal for teachers who want to maintain their classroom skills without the administrative burnout of a full-time contract. Because you are working through GSL Education, you will have a dedicated consultant (Judith) who will manage your diary and handle your pay.
Quick Tip: When working supply, always carry a “Sub Bag” or “Emergency Pack” with a few universal activities (like a high-quality picture book or quick math games). If a school hasn’t left a lesson plan, being prepared makes you look incredibly professional and ensures you get invited back.
