Skill Zone 2 Unit Mechanical Transport (MT) Driver

UK Ministry of Defence

Unit Mechanical Transport (MT) Driver – Frimley Park Hospital

Join the Joint Hospital Group (South East) and become a cornerstone of the medical support network for the Ministry of Defence (MOD). Based at Frimley Park Hospital, you will play a dual role that blends expert driving with essential fleet management. While our uniformed personnel deploy abroad, you will provide the vital “continuity of care” at home, ensuring that patients and medical teams have the transport they need to operate local and UK-wide missions. If you are an organized professional with a commitment to public service and safety, this role offers a unique opportunity within a welcoming and encouraging team environment.

About the Role

As the Unit MT Driver, you serve as the heartbeat of the JHG(SE) transportation network. Your responsibilities go far beyond sitting behind the wheel; you are the manager of the unit’s mechanical transport functions. You will be responsible for the daily serviceability of the fleet, from overseeing “first parade” safety checks to allocating vehicles for specific mission requests. When unit vehicles aren’t available, you’ll pivot to coordinating hire cars, managing fuel cards, and navigating the logistics of UK-wide travel. This is a highly accountable role where your organizational skills ensure that medical services never stall due to transport issues.

Main Responsibilities

  • Maintaining and managing the fleet vehicles in accordance with (IAW) Headquarters (HQ) SE Brigade (Bde) direction.

  • Allocating according to availability of Unit vehicles on receipt of request applications.

  • Being responsible for overseeing and monitoring the first parade of Unit vehicles and managing and maintaining the serviceability of applicable vehicles.

  • Authorisation of requests for Hire vehicles to the Civil Service (CS) Travel Clerk if Unit vehicle usage is not suitable or available.

  • Managing and issuing Agency Fuel Cards (AFC) and M6 Toll cards for both Unit and Hire vehicles.

Requirements & Skills

Essential Licences:

  • Full UK Drivers licence Inc ‘category D1 and Category A’ (Must have 3 years of experience or valid status for these categories).

Behaviours (Success Profiles):

  • Leadership: Managing the MT function and overseeing daily vehicle serviceability.

  • Making Effective Decisions: Allocating vehicles based on priority and availability.

  • Working Together: Collaborating with the CS Travel Clerk and wider JHG(SE) teams.

  • Managing a Quality Service: Ensuring all transport meets MOD competency and safety standards.

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary: £23,116 per year.

  • Pension: A Civil Service pension with an employer contribution of 28.97% (£6,696 annual contribution from MOD).

  • Facilities: Access to an on-site gym and off-site parking.

  • Culture: A diverse and inclusive workplace with a “zero tolerance” approach to unacceptable behaviors.

  • Security: This role requires a Security Check (SC) level of clearance.
