Renal Dietetic Clinical Support Worker (Band 3)

NHS Lothian is offering a permanent, full-time opportunity for a motivated individual to join the specialist Renal Dietetic Team at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. This “Higher Level” Band 3 role is vital in supporting the nutritional health of patients with complex renal and vascular conditions. You will work within a fast-paced clinical environment, bridging the gap between administrative coordination and direct patient nutritional support across wards, dialysis units, and transplant services.

Core Requirements and Skills

  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to communicate sensitively with patients who are managing chronic illnesses and long-term dialysis.

  • Technical Literacy: Proficiency in office-based tasks and the ability to learn hospital software systems like TRAK for patient record management.

  • Organization: Strong skills in stock control and the procurement of specialized nutritional products.

  • Teamwork: Ability to work under the delegation and supervision of Registered Dietitians while managing a varied workload independently.

  • Vetting: Must have or obtain a PVG Scheme membership (Protection of Vulnerable Groups) through Disclosure Scotland before commencing work.

Key Responsibilities

The role balances clinical patient interaction with essential departmental logistics:

  • Patient Reviews: Conducting nutritional reviews for inpatients on renal and vascular wards, as well as day patients within the Dialysis Unit.

  • Transplant Support: Assisting the dietetic delivery for the Islet (Diabetes) and Renal Transplant services.

  • Acute Adult Dietetics: Providing cross-cover support for the wider Acute Adult Dietetic Department, including the Department of Clinical Neurosciences (DCN).

  • Stock & Resource Management: Taking responsibility for nutritional product stock levels, preparing orders, and helping develop patient education resources.

  • Quality Improvement: Participating in team-led initiatives to improve service delivery and patient outcomes.
