Regulatory Officer 1 – Waste Shipments – 32913

Environment Agency

job description

The Environment Agency is seeking a dedicated Regulatory Officer to join our national Waste Shipments team within the Environmental Markets and Regulation department. Our mission is to ensure “right waste, right place” by enforcing government regulations on how companies dispose of and move waste. As a member of our team, you will play a critical role in driving a circular economy, ensuring that waste entering or leaving England is handled appropriately for recycling and recovery, and eliminating illegal waste activities.

Experience/Skills Required

  • Customer Service & Communication: Excellent ability to build relationships, answer technical queries, and convey complex information to diverse stakeholders.

  • Technical & Analytical: Experience in producing accurate reports and the collation/analysis of complex data using Microsoft Office to make evidence-based decisions.

  • Organizational Skills: Strong time management and planning skills to handle a varied workload with conflicting deadlines.

  • Interpersonal Skills: Influencing and persuasion skills to win people over and the ability to manage difficult or confrontational conversations.

  • Adaptability: Flexible and enthusiastic about working collaboratively in a dispersed, hybrid-working team.

As a Regulatory Officer, you will be the key link in planning and delivering compliance activity. Your day-to-day will involve interpreting complex regulations, diagnosing technical problems, and developing solutions for customers and stakeholders. You will deal with sensitive information in line with data protection guidelines and contribute to the improvement of operational procedures. Beyond your core duties, you will play a vital role in the Environment Agency’s emergency response, taking on an incident role to provide business continuity or disaster support, which may attract additional payments and includes full training.

The Circular Economy & Waste Regulation

The Waste Shipments team ensures that England contributes positively to the global environment:

  • International Regulation: Ensuring all waste exports and imports comply with strict legal requirements to prevent illegal dumping.

  • Resource Recovery: Improving the quality of recycling so that waste can be treated as a valuable resource rather than a pollutant.

  • Enforcement: Identifying and stopping illegal waste movements that undermine legitimate businesses and damage the environment.

Why Join the Environment Agency?

  • Inclusive Culture: We are fully committed to being an inclusive employer and welcome flexible working, including job shares.

  • Hybrid Working: We utilize a modern approach that blends office-based and home-working environments.

  • Benefits: A fantastic pension scheme, a starting allowance of 25 days annual leave (plus bank holidays), and competitive salary.

  • Incident Response: Opportunities for additional training and payments through your dedicated incident role.
