Job Description

Aubay UK is recruiting a sophisticated Quantitative Analyst to join their specialized “Insourcing” team, deployed directly into the front office of a Global Energy Super Major. This is not a standard analytical role; it is a high-impact position where you will bridge the gap between financial mathematics and the physical reality of global energy markets.

In this role, you will be architecting the frameworks used to value some of the most complex assets in the energy world, including gas storage facilities and exotic multi-factor derivatives. Working in a fast-paced trading environment, you will translate data into actionable insights that drive the transition toward a net-zero emissions future by 2050.

Key Responsibilities

  • Model Engineering: Design, implement, and maintain high-fidelity models for Monte Carlo simulations, price path forecasting, and multi-factor pricing.

  • Complex Valuation: Price intricate option structures and perform technical assessments of gas storage assets using stochastic volatility models.

  • Front-Office Partnership: Work side-by-side with traders to provide quantitative decision support and real-time market analysis.

  • Innovation: Stay at the forefront of academic and industry research to refine current models and develop novel analytical solutions.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Academic Foundation: An advanced degree (PhD or MS) in Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Computer Science, or Engineering.

  • Energy Domain: Proven track record as a front-office quant within an energy commodities trading desk.

  • Mathematical Toolkit: Deep hands-on experience with Monte Carlo simulations, stochastic volatility, and exotic option pricing.

  • Technical Stack: Exceptional programming and numerical skills (typically Python, C++, or R) and a strong grasp of SQL for data manipulation.

5 FAQs

  • Who is the ultimate employer? You are employed by Aubay UK but deployed to work directly inside a Global Energy Super Major (likely one of the “Big Six”).

  • What does “Flexible salary” mean? It indicates that for candidates with exceptional niche experience (e.g., specific gas storage modeling), the firm is willing to negotiate beyond the listed £72k range.

  • Is international travel mandatory? Yes, the role specifically mentions a presence in both the UK and Qatar.

  • What are the work-from-home options? Aubay UK offers work-from-home opportunities, though front-office roles often require some on-site presence for trading desk collaboration.

  • What is the typical career path? Many analysts transition from Aubay directly into the client’s permanent workforce or move into Head of Quantitative Research or Portfolio Management roles.

Expert Analysis

In 2026, Energy Quants are the architects of the Net-Zero Transition. The complexity of pricing “intermittent” energy and storage is the new frontier of finance. Success in this role depends on your ability to model Cross-Commodity Correlations (e.g., how hydrogen or carbon pricing impacts traditional gas spreads). With Nottingham becoming a regional hub for “Green Growth,” this role is perfectly positioned at the intersection of traditional finance and sustainable energy.

Location & Logistics Guide

Nottingham in 2026 is ranked as one of the UK’s top cities for business growth and a leader in green technology innovation. It offers a high quality of life with significantly lower living costs than London, while the East Midlands Mayoral Combined County Authority (EMMCCA) has heavily invested in sustainable transport. For the Qatar portion of the role, you will be operating in one of the world’s most significant energy hubs.

Career Path

A Quantitative Analyst in the energy sector typically progresses to a Senior Quant Researcher, then to a Lead Quant Strategist, and eventually into Director of Trading Analytics or Risk Management. The specific exposure to an Energy Super Major provides a “gold-standard” resume that is highly sought after by commodity hedge funds and global investment banks.
