Project Design Engineer

Mott MacDonald Bentley | MMB

Job description

Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) is looking for a Project Design Engineer to join our fully integrated design-and-build team in Manchester. Following our appointment to the AMP8 framework with United Utilities, we are embarking on a £3bn infrastructure programme across the North West, including massive upgrades to wastewater treatment and storm overflow reduction. This hybrid role bridges the gap between technical Design Engineering and Project Management. You won’t just be behind a desk; you’ll lead the “project triangle” alongside a Site Manager and Quantity Surveyor to see your designs through from initial outline to onsite commissioning.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Integrated Leadership: Lead the design of water and wastewater projects, coordinating civil, mechanical, electrical, and process designers.

  • Lifecycle Management: Manage projects through the entire design lifecycle, ensuring they are completed on programme, within budget, and to quality specifications.

  • The “Project Triangle”: Collaborate daily with Site Managers and Quantity Surveyors to ensure designs are commercially viable and safely constructible.

  • Technical Excellence: Undertake design work within your own discipline while mentoring junior colleagues and building “one-team” relationships with client technical teams.

  • Safety & Compliance: Apply a deep understanding of CDM 2015 (Designer/Principal Designer duties) to every project stage.

What You’ll Need

  • Education: An accredited Degree in Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Process, or Electrical).

  • Professional Status: Incorporated Member of an Engineering Institution (or actively working toward it).

  • Sector Expertise: Proven experience in the outline and detailed design of water or wastewater projects.

  • Regulatory Knowledge: Solid understanding of CDM 2015 regulations and industry standards.

Why Choose MMB?

We offer a unique environment where the designer and contractor sit at the same table, allowing for rapid professional growth and a clear path to Chartership.

  • Financial Benefits: Annual bonus schemes, matched pension (4.5%–7%), and payment of your professional institution subscriptions.

  • Work-Life Balance: 33 days holiday (minimum), flexible/agile working arrangements, and “WSP My Hour” style flexibility for personal commitments.

  • Family Support: Industry-leading enhanced leave, including 26 weeks paid maternity/adoption leave and support for those with significant caring responsibilities.

  • Inclusion: Access to Advanced Employee Networks (LGBTQ+, Race & Ethnicity, Disability, Parents/Carers).

Note on Sponsorship: Due to April 2024 UK Government changes, MMB is currently not offering sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa route. Applicants must have existing, non-sponsored right to work in the UK.

The AMP8 Impact

By joining this team, you are contributing to the largest spill reduction programme in the UK, protecting over 500km of rivers and bathing waters. It is a chance to apply high-level engineering to critical environmental challenges.
