Programme Facilitator – The Probation Service

Are you passionate about rehabilitation? Could you help people make meaningful and sustained changes in their lives? If so, then a career as a Programme Facilitator in the Probation Service is for you. We provide vital interventions to people who engage in harmful behavior to help reduce their likelihood of reoffending. By delivering groupwork and individual sessions, you will support individuals in building on their strengths to lead more fulfilling, pro-social lives. Join a team of dedicated professionals where your ability to motivate others creates a safer community for everyone.

About the Role

As a Programme Facilitator, you are a catalyst for change. You will deliver evidence-based Accredited Programmes and Structured Interventions specifically designed to shift the attitudes and beliefs of people on probation. Your work involves managing complex group dynamics and addressing challenging behaviors in a safe, structured environment. You won’t just be presenting information; you’ll be using pro-social modelling to reinforce positive life choices. Because our sessions are designed to be accessible to those with work or caring commitments, evening work is an essential requirement of this role, offering you a unique schedule with significant financial premiums for unsocial hours.

  • Risk & Wellbeing Monitoring: Continuously assessing the progress and safety of participants throughout the intervention period.

  • Collaboration: Sharing vital insights and progress reports with Probation Practitioners, courts, and Domestic Abuse Safety Officers.

  • Pro-social Modelling: Consistently demonstrating positive behaviors and values to encourage participants to desist from crime.

  • Professional Reporting: Maintaining accurate records of attendance and engagement to support effective sentence management.

  • Stakeholder Briefings: Providing workshops and briefings to wider probation staff and external criminal justice partners.

Requirements & Skills

  • Communication: Exceptional ability to facilitate groups, manage dynamics, and communicate effectively with people from all walks of life.

  • Resilience: Capacity to work with individuals who have committed serious offenses and remain professional in challenging situations.

  • Adaptability: Willingness to travel across a large regional area and work regular unsocial hours (evenings and Saturdays).

  • Technical Requirement: Successfully complete a 6-month probationary period and pass a specialized assessment centre and training programme.

  • Eligibility: Must have the right to work in the UK. Note: This role is not eligible for new Skilled Worker visas (effective July 22, 2025).

Benefits & Career Progression

  • Starting Salary: £26,475 (plus significant unsocial hours premiums).

  • Unsocial Hours Pay: Earn an additional 30% for evening work and a 50% premium for Saturdays.

  • Pay Progression: Annual increases via the Competency Based Framework (CBF) as your expertise in rehabilitation grows.

  • Pension: Access to the highly competitive Civil Service pension scheme.

  • Training: Extensive, fully-funded training on the theory and practice of behavioral interventions.

The Recruitment Process

  1. Application: Submit responses to Civil Service Behaviours and Experience-based questions.

  2. Sift: Applications are reviewed against the lead behavior.
