Operator

National Grid

Job description

National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) is seeking a motivated Operator to join our Major Projects South West Maintenance & Faults team. This is a hands-on, vital role where you will support the backbone of the Somerset power network, ensuring homes and businesses stay connected. Working out of our Taunton, Weston, or Bristol depots, you’ll be at the forefront of the energy transition, maintaining and repairing critical infrastructure up to 132kV. If you are looking for a career that combines technical skill with physical activity and a commitment to safety, this is your opportunity to join a global leader in the utilities sector.

Main Responsibilities

As an Operator, you will work alongside a Craftsperson to support the construction, maintenance, replacement, and repair of assets up to and including 132kV equipment. You may also carry out asset inspections as required.

You’ll spend much of your time out in the field—either lone working while undertaking inspections or as part of a team of up to four, predominantly at outdoor substations. The environment is fast-paced, hands-on, and requires someone who can act quickly, decisively, and responsibly.

Ideal Candidate

  • Education: GCSE English and Maths (Grade A–G / 1–9) or equivalent (e.g., Functional Skills).

  • Mobility: A full UK driving licence and the flexibility to travel throughout the Somerset area.

  • Safety First: A strong awareness of safety procedures, including the proper use of PPE in live operational environments.

  • Commitment: Willingness to take part in standby duties and work as part of an on-call rotation.

  • Physicality: Ability to work at heights (please note the equipment safety weight limit of 135kg).

  • Experience: Prior electrical experience is a plus, but we provide full training for those with the right attitude.
