Operations Support Apprentice – Civil Service (Prison)

Oxfordshire City Council

Operational Support Grade (OSG) Apprentice – HMP Grendon & Springhill

Are you looking for a stable, entry-level career in the justice system that allows you to “earn while you learn”? HMP Grendon and HMP Springhill are seeking motivated individuals to join their teams as Operational Support Grade (OSG) Apprentices. This is a critical security and support role within the Civil Service, providing the essential backbone for a safe and functioning prison. With a starting salary of £29,432 and a structured training program, this apprenticeship is an excellent gateway into a lifelong career in the Ministry of Justice.

About the Role

As an OSG Apprentice, you will be the eyes and ears of the prison. Unlike Prison Officers, OSGs are focused on the vital “behind-the-scenes” security and operational tasks that keep the establishment running. You will be part of a team responsible for managing the flow of people and goods in and out of the prison. This role is highly varied; one hour you might be checking vehicles entering the gates, and the next you could be monitoring CCTV or supervising prisoner mail. You will work within a supportive environment while completing a formal apprenticeship program that grants you a recognized qualification in prison support services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Access Control: Managing the gatehouse, checking the identification of staff, visitors, and contractors, and searching vehicles entering the grounds.

  • Security Monitoring: Operating CCTV systems and radio networks to ensure the safety of everyone within the establishment.

  • Logistics Support: Supervising the movement of prisoner property, mail, and canteen deliveries.

  • Cordon & Patrol: Conducting perimeter patrols and monitoring the “integrity” of the prison boundary.

  • Escort Duties: Supervising contractors or delivery drivers while they are on-site to ensure they follow security protocols.

  • Emergency Support: Assisting Prison Officers during incidents by providing radio support and controlling access points.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Age: Open to applicants aged 16 and above.

  • Personal Qualities: You must be reliable, alert, and have a high level of integrity.

  • Communication: Clear and confident verbal communication skills for interacting with visitors and using radio equipment.

  • Teamwork: A strong commitment to working as “one team” with Prison Officers and other support staff.

  • Commitment to Learning: Willingness to engage with the structured apprenticeship training program alongside your daily duties.

  • Eligibility: Must meet Civil Service nationality and security vetting requirements (Standard DBS/Security Check).

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary: £29,432 per year (inclusive of any applicable local allowances).

  • Earn While You Learn: Receive a full-time salary while working toward a professional qualification in the justice sector.

  • Pension: Access to the highly competitive Civil Service pension scheme.

  • Stability: A permanent role within the Civil Service with clear paths for progression (e.g., moving into Prison Officer or Management roles).

  • Location: Work at the unique HMP Grendon (a therapeutic community) or HMP Springhill (an open prison) near Aylesbury.
