Operational Support Manager – HM Coastguard

HM Coastguard (HMCG) is looking for a dedicated Operational Support Manager to join our mission of “Safer Lives, Safer Ships, Cleaner Seas.” As the operational arm of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, we are responsible for critical national missions including Search and Rescue and Pollution Response. About the Role

As an Operational Support Manager, you will be the backbone of HM Coastguard’s administrative efficiency, ensuring that our national functions receive high-quality support. You will be responsible for coordinating operational resources and providing executive secretariat functions for senior management meetings and working groups. A significant part of this role involves people leadership; you will mentor and manage a remote team of 5-7 direct reports, overseeing their welfare, performance, and professional development to ensure the delivery of excellent outcomes for the public.

Key Responsibilities

  • Resource Allocation: Ensuring appropriate Operational Support resource is allocated for the administrative support for national functions.

  • Secretariat Functions: Providing resource for full executive secretariat functions and managing administrative tasks for HMCG management operational meetings and working groups as required.

  • Logistics Management: Management of the HMCG uniform ordering process.

  • Service Delivery: Providing Operational Support resource to HMCG Operations and managing team email inboxes.

  • People Leadership: Line management activities of the reporting officers including conducting performance management reviews, staff welfare, leave and absence requests and authorisation of staff travel and expenses.

Required Experience

To be successful in this role you will need to have the following experience:

  • Experienced in line-managing a remote team, ensuring clarity, support and consistent performance.

  • Highly organised and detail-focused, able to provide clear, timely and accurate secretariat support to enable effective governance and decision-making.

  • A strong team player with clear written and verbal communication skills, able to build positive working relationships.

  • Accurate and flexible, able to manage a busy and varied workload and work effectively with limited supervision.

Benefits & Working Arrangements

  • Salary: £30,485 per annum.

  • Pension: A Civil Service Pension with a significant employer contribution of 28.97%.

  • Leave: 25 days annual leave (increasing to 30), plus 8 bank holidays and a privilege day for the King’s birthday.
