Local delivery officer

Girlguiding

job description

Girlguiding is seeking a passionate and proactive Local Delivery Officer to spearhead a groundbreaking pilot programme in Birmingham. As part of our “Girlguiding Inspired Experiences” strategy, this role is dedicated to creating inclusive, empowering opportunities co-created specifically with Muslim girls and their communities. Funded by Islamic Relief, this project is a vital step in ensuring our guiding offer is accessible, culturally resonant, and designed through the lens of human-centred design. You will be at the heart of an initiative that aims to reach more girls in ways that truly work for them, shaping the future of the UK’s largest youth organization for girls.

About you:

  • You’ll be an organised, confident facilitator with experience in youth or community engagement, ideally with minority groups.

  • You understand Birmingham’s Muslim communities and can gather insights in a culturally sensitive way.

  • Strong communication, relationship-building, and organisational skills are essential.

In this role, you will act as the primary bridge between Girlguiding and Birmingham’s vibrant Muslim communities, building deep, trusted relationships with schools, mosques, and local organizations. Your day-to-day will involve facilitating dynamic workshops and focus groups where girls, parents, and community leaders have a direct say in the design of the pilot. You will manage the end-to-end delivery of these sessions—handling everything from logistical planning to feedback collection—ensuring the programme remains data-driven and funder-compliant. By applying human-centred design principles, you will transform raw community insights into a tangible Girlguiding experience that empowers young Muslim women to discover their full potential.

Context and Community Statistics

Birmingham represents a critical area for this pilot due to its unique demographic profile. Reaching these communities requires an understanding of the local landscape:

  • Muslim Population in Birmingham: According to the most recent UK Census data, approximately 29.9% of Birmingham’s population identifies as Muslim (roughly 341,000 people), significantly higher than the national average of 6.5%.

  • Youth Demographics: Birmingham is one of the youngest cities in Europe; approximately 40% of its residents are under the age of 25.

  • Girlguiding’s Reach: Nationally, Girlguiding has over 300,000 members, yet internal data suggests that girls from minority ethnic backgrounds, particularly from South Asian and Muslim communities, have historically been underrepresented compared to their proportion of the UK population.

  • Strategy Impact: The “Inspired Experiences” programme aims to bridge this gap, utilizing its 80,000 volunteers to create specialized units that respect religious and cultural requirements while maintaining the core mission of girl-led adventure.
