Interaction Designer – Private Rented Sector Database (MHCLG)

The Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government (MHCLG) is at the heart of the government’s top priorities, working to improve homes, local councils, and communities. As an Interaction Designer, you will lead the design of the new Private Rented Sector Database, a high-profile service that directly impacts landlords, tenants, and local authorities. If you are passionate about creating inclusive, accessible, and user-centered digital services that translate complex legislation into simple journeys, there has never been a more exciting time to join our digital team.

About the Role

In this role, you will be the design lead for the end-to-end Private Rented Sector Database service. You will coordinate journeys across a diverse range of users—from landlords registering properties and letting agents onboarding, to tenants seeking information and local authorities accessing critical data. Working within a multi-disciplinary team of researchers, content designers, and developers, you will use Figma and the GOV.UK Design System to prototype and iterate interfaces. Your mission is to ensure that even the most complex legal requirements of the Renters’ Rights Act are translated into clear, accessible, and trustworthy digital interactions that meet the Service Standard.

Key Responsibilities

  • End-to-End Journey Design: Ensure users can navigate the Private Rented Sector Database effectively across both digital and offline routes, creating seamless flows for landlords, tenants, and agents.

  • Strategic Collaboration: Partner with content designers, user researchers, and policy experts to ensure interaction design aligns with the broader strategy for the private rented sector.

  • Design Quality & Standards: Maintain the integrity of screens and patterns, ensuring every interaction follows the GOV.UK Design System and is backed by research evidence.

  • Translating Legislation: Transform complex legal requirements into accessible user journeys as the Renters’ Rights Act is implemented and evolves.

  • Evidence-Based Iteration: Use data and user research to develop, test, and refine multiple design concepts to find the most effective solution.

Requirements & Skills

Essential Criteria:

  • Prototyping usable interfaces that meet complex user needs

  • Explaining clearly design problems, ideas and decisions

  • Designing inclusive services that meet a wide range of access needs

  • Using research and data to develop, test and iterate multiple design ideas

  • Involving the right people throughout the design process

  • Using Figma and a good understanding of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2, GOV.UK Design System, the Government Service Manual and the GOV.UK Style Guide.

Benefits & Working Culture

  • Impactful Work: Contribute to a service at the top of the political agenda that makes a real difference to people’s housing security.

  • Modern Tooling: Work within a mature digital environment using Figma and industry-standard accessibility frameworks.

  • Collaborative Environment: Join a supportive team that values user-centered design and continuous learning (follow our progress on the MHCLG Digital blog).

  • Note on Eligibility: MHCLG does not offer visa sponsorship; applicants must have a valid visa for the duration of their employment.
