Lead a Department of Innovation and Excellence

Glenthorne High School is seeking an enthusiastic, ambitious, and experienced Head of Maths to lead our high-performing Mathematics department. As part of the Willow Learning Trust and a National Teaching School, Glenthorne is a vibrant, oversubscribed mixed comprehensive academy with over 1,700 pupils. We are looking for a visionary leader who can build on our current success, driving pupil progress and inspiring a love for Mathematics across all key stages. This is a pivotal leadership role where you will be supported by a forward-thinking Senior Leadership Team and a collaborative staff community.

The Role & Strategic Leadership

  • Departmental Vision: Take full responsibility for the strategic direction of the Maths department, ensuring a coherent and challenging curriculum from Year 7 to A-Level.

  • Team Management: Lead and mentor a large team of specialists, fostering a culture of professional dialogue, shared resources, and excellence in classroom practice.

  • Data-Driven Progress: Monitor and evaluate pupil attainment across all year groups, implementing targeted interventions to close achievement gaps and stretch high-attaining pupils.

  • Innovation: Stay at the forefront of mathematical pedagogy, integrating digital tools and diverse problem-solving strategies into the schemes of work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Quality of Teaching: Conduct regular lesson observations and work scrutinies to maintain “Outstanding” standards of teaching and learning.

  • KS5 Oversight: Support the delivery and expansion of A-Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics, ensuring students are prepared for STEM pathways at university.

  • Behaviour & Culture: Uphold the school’s well-established behaviour management systems to ensure a focused, respectful, and productive learning environment.

  • Staff Development: Oversee the induction of ECTs and provide bespoke CPD for experienced staff within the department.

Candidate Profile

  • Experience: At least 4 years of teaching experience with a proven track record of excellent results.

  • Leadership: Demonstrable experience in team management or a middle-leadership role (e.g., Second in Charge or Lead Teacher).

  • Subject Expertise: Exceptional subject knowledge across the full secondary age range, including the ability to lead on higher-tier GCSE and A-Level content.

  • Communication: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to inspire staff, engage pupils, and communicate effectively with parents and the Willow Learning Trust.
