Head of Finance – Part-Time (Trafford, Manchester)

Bayman Atkinson Smythe is recruiting on behalf of Sale Sharks Foundation for a Part-Time Head of Finance. The Foundation harnesses the power of sport to create positive change across the North West, impacting over 21,000 people each year through Community Inclusion, Education, and Rugby Development programmes.

As the Part-Time Head of Finance, you will act as a trusted strategic partner to the CEO, Senior Leadership Team, and Trustees, ensuring the charity’s financial resilience, sustainability, and growth. You will provide insight, governance, and financial planning expertise to maximise organisational impact. This role requires a qualified finance professional to join the senior leadership team and play a central role in shaping the charity’s financial future.

The Role

• Serve as key financial advisor to the CEO, Senior Leadership Team, and Trustees
• Lead budgeting, forecasting, and quarterly reforecasting processes
• Prepare and present monthly management accounts with clear commentary and insight
• Monitor cashflow, reserves, and advise on risk, investments, and long-term sustainability
• Oversee bookkeeping, reconciliations, and debtor management
• Prepare quarterly VAT returns and monthly Gift Aid claims
• Manage restricted, unrestricted, and designated funds in line with charity accounting standards
• Ensure timely month-end close and reporting
• Support grant reporting and funder compliance
• Handle invoicing, supplier payments, and supplier relationships
• Own and optimise QuickBooks processes with a focus on automation and efficiency
• Ensure compliance with Charity Commission and Companies House regulations
• Lead audit preparation and liaise with external auditors
• Prepare statutory accounts and corporation tax returns
• Maintain and enhance financial controls, policies, and procedures
• Keep updated on regulatory changes, including SORP framework, and provide guidance accordingly

The Person

• Qualified ACA, CIMA, or ACCA finance professional
• Demonstrated ability to influence and advise at board level
• Strong technical expertise in budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strategic thinker with a hands-on approach
• Passionate about community impact aligned with Sale Sharks Foundation values
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
• Charity sector experience is desirable

• Part-time, hybrid role: 2–3 days per week with flexible working arrangements
• Pro-rated salary:

  • 2 days (15 hours): £20,000–£22,000

  • 3 days (22.5 hours): £30,000–£33,000
