Government Social Research – Research Officer Graduate Scheme

Government Economic Service & Social Research Profession

Government Social Research (GSR) – Research Officer

The Government Social Research (GSR) profession is the analytical engine of the Civil Service. We provide the evidence base that allows decision-makers to understand the complexities of society—measuring attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors to ensure government policy is effective and inclusive. As a Research Officer, you won’t just be collecting data; you will be evaluating “what works,” identifying the social impacts of government decisions, and providing expert advice to shape the future of the UK.

About the Role

In this role, you will act as a primary source of social science expertise within your department. You will design, trial, and implement research strategies that challenge and improve government delivery. Your work will involve utilizing a range of methodologies—from systematic literature reviews to complex qualitative and quantitative studies—to provide a holistic view of societal change. By maintaining a rigorous focus on research ethics and data interpretation, you will help bridge the gap between academic-level research and practical, real-world policy implementation.

1. Qualification Route

  • Degree: Hold an undergraduate degree (minimum 2:2) by August 2026.

  • Social Research Content: The degree must contain substantial methods training (at least one-third of your modules).

  • Methods Training: Must include quantitative research methods plus at least three of the following:

    • Qualitative methods

    • Systematic/literature reviews

    • Interpretation of data and presentation of results

    • Study design and Hypothesis testing

    • The application of ethics to research

2. Experience Route

  • Practice: At least 4 years of professional social research experience in a research agency or specialist team.

  • Core Skills: Proven expertise in quantitative methods plus at least three from the list above (Qualitative, Systematic Reviews, Data Interpretation, etc.).

Requirements & Person Specification

  • Nationality: Must satisfy Civil Service Nationality Rules and Right to Work in the UK. Note: Visa sponsorship is not available.

  • Security Clearance: Must hold or be willing to obtain CTC/SC/DV level clearance. Some departments require 5 years of UK residency.

    • Communicating and Influencing: Clearly presenting complex data to non-analytical audiences.

    • Managing a Quality Service: Delivering accurate, timely, and ethical research.

    • Working Together: Collaborating across diverse government departments.
