Hachette UK
Job Summary: Fonts Manager (2yr FTC)
Hachette UK, the UK’s second-largest book publishing group and a creative powerhouse, is seeking a Fonts Manager for a two-year Fixed Term Contract (FTC). This is a specialized, high-impact role within the Group’s infrastructure, ensuring that the typography across its 10 autonomous publishing divisions and 60+ imprints is managed with precision. From bestsellers like Stephen King to educational resources, you will be the guardian of the digital assets that give Hachette’s books their visual identity.
Key Responsibilities
-
Asset Governance: Centralize and manage the font library for the entire group, ensuring all publishing divisions (Orion, Little, Brown, Hodder & Stoughton, etc.) have access to the necessary typographic tools.
-
Licensing & Compliance: Act as the primary point of contact for font licensing, ensuring that all print, e-book, and marketing usage remains legally compliant and cost-effective.
-
Workflow Optimization: Work with production and design teams to streamline font distribution and technical implementation across digital and physical formats.
-
Technical Support: Troubleshoot font-related technical issues, specifically focusing on e-book rendering and complex print typography.
-
Strategic Planning: During this 2-year term, you will likely be involved in auditing current assets and implementing long-term management systems (Font Management Software) to modernize the group’s typographic workflow.
What Hachette is Looking For
-
Expert Knowledge of Typography: A deep understanding of font formats (OpenType, WOFF, TrueType), type design, and the technical nuances of digital vs. print rendering.
-
Licensing Expertise: Proven experience navigating complex End User License Agreements (EULAs) and managing relationships with type foundries.
-
Detail Orientation: High level of accuracy in cataloging and organizing large-scale digital asset libraries.
-
Communication Skills: The ability to work across “autonomous” divisions, providing a centralized service while respecting the unique creative needs of different imprints.
-
Industry Experience: A background in publishing, graphic design, or media production is highly advantageous.
Why Join Hachette UK?
-
Scale and Impact: You will be supporting the world’s best authors and the fastest-growing audio/digital business in the UK.
-
Creative Environment: Based in Carmelite House, London, you’ll be part of a mission-driven organization at the heart of the UK’s creative industries.
-
Global Network: Hachette UK is part of Hachette Livre, the world’s third-largest trade publisher, offering a vast professional network.
-
Pioneering Culture: Work within an award-winning group that values diversity, learning, and the discovery of new ideas.
Application Tip: The “E-Book” Factor
Peer Note: Since Hachette is a market leader in e-books, they are likely facing challenges with web-font embedding and cross-platform legibility. In your application, highlight your experience with digital-first typography and how you ensure brand consistency across Kindle, Kobo, and Apple Books.
