Finance Litigation Legal Director

JMC Legal Recruitment

Job Description

JMC Legal Recruitment is representing a Top 30 international firm seeking a Finance Litigation Legal Director to join their Tier 1 financial disputes team in Manchester. This is a “best of both worlds” opportunity: you will handle high-stakes, technically demanding litigation for global clearing banks and digital challengers, yet—unusually for this level—there is no requirement to bring a client following. This role is designed for a senior litigator who excels at the “black letter law” and strategic delivery of complex cases and is looking for a clear, merit-based pathway to Partnership.

Key Responsibilities

  • High-Value Dispute Resolution: Lead on multi-million pound disputes involving investment firms, major lenders, and digital banks.

  • Strategic Advisory: Act as the lead strategist on multi-party litigation, often involving cross-border elements or significant regulatory implications.

  • Practice Leadership: Work alongside the Head of Department to influence the growth of the Manchester practice and refine the firm’s technology-enabled delivery model.

  • Client Management: Serve as the primary senior point of contact for a blue-chip client roster, managing relationships without the pressure of “cold” business development.

  • Mentorship: Oversee and develop the junior litigation team, ensuring technical excellence and high-quality work product.

Requirements

  • Experience: A minimum of 8 years’ PQE in Financial or Commercial Litigation.

  • Technical Edge: Deep knowledge of the Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) and specific experience in banking and finance-related disputes (e.g., mis-selling, fraud, breach of mandate, or complex restructuring litigation).

  • Leadership: Proven ability to manage complex case files and lead teams in high-pressure environments.

  • Education: Strong academic background and professional training from a recognized Top 50 or boutique litigation firm.

The Firm & Benefits

  • Market Position: A Top 30 global firm with multiple Legal 500 Tier 1 rankings.

  • Remuneration: Competitive salary of £85,000 – £110,000 per annum, plus an industry-leading benefits package.

  • Culture: A modern, flexible, and tech-forward environment that prioritizes internal retention and clear career mapping.

  • Progression: This role is specifically highlighted as having “excellent visibility” for further advancement within the partnership structure.

The Finance Litigation Landscape (2026)

In 2026, the finance litigation sector is being reshaped by the “digital-first” banking era and evolving consumer duty regulations.

  • The Rise of Fintech Disputes: Legal Directors are increasingly dealing with litigation arising from embedded finance and digital wallet security breaches, requiring a blend of traditional banking law and cyber-governance expertise.

  • Consumer Duty Focus: Following the long-term impact of the FCA’s Consumer Duty (2023), litigation often centers on the “delivery of good outcomes,” moving the goalposts for what constitutes a “fair” banking practice.

  • Class Actions: There is a notable trend toward US-style collective actions in the UK High Court, particularly regarding historical interest rate settings and fee transparency.
