External SENDCo (Associate SENDCo)

Angel Meadow School

job description

Angel Meadow School is a brand-new independent special school in Manchester, specifically designed for pupils aged 11–16 with EHCPs. We specialize in supporting young people who face social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs, communication difficulties, and complex barriers to learning. As we prepare to open our doors in early 2026, we are seeking a strategic and experienced External SENDCo (Associate SENDCo) to lead our SEND systems and ensure the highest standards of statutory compliance and EHCP delivery.

The Role

This is a high-impact, non-teaching leadership role focused on building robust systems from the ground up. You will hold professional responsibility for the coordination of SEND services, ensuring that our small, therapeutic provision (maximum 5 pupils per class) delivers on every promise made in a student’s EHCP.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Statutory Compliance: Lead the implementation of EHCPs, provision mapping, and statutory review cycles.

  • Strategic Leadership: Quality-assure SEND systems and prepare documentation to ensure the school is “Ofsted-ready.”

  • Annual Reviews: Prepare for and lead Annual Reviews, acting as the primary liaison with Local Authorities and external agencies.

  • Staff Mentorship: Support teachers and TAs in translating complex EHCP outcomes into practical, high-impact classroom strategies.

  • Admissions & Placements: Advise on admissions and specialist provision to ensure the school remains a suitable placement for new applicants.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Required Education: A degree or equivalent professional qualification in Education, Psychology, SEND, or Inclusion.

  • Mandatory Certification: Must hold the National Award for SEND Coordination (NASENCO) or an equivalent qualification.

  • Professional Background: Significant experience as a SENDCo within a special school, Alternative Provision (AP), or mainstream setting.

  • Knowledge Base: Deep understanding of the SEND Code of Practice, EHCP processes, and trauma-informed practice.

  • Soft Skills: Independent, values-driven, and confident in collaborating with therapists and commissioners.

Why Join Angel Meadow School?

This position offers a unique “clean slate” to shape practice in a growing specialist setting without the pressures of a classroom-based role.

  • Manageable Caseload: Due to our small pupil numbers, you can focus on quality and depth of support.

  • Competitive Compensation: Day rate of £300–£450 (depending on experience).

  • Flexibility: A manageable working pattern of 1–2 days per week, offering excellent work-life balance.

  • Strategic Impact: The opportunity to establish the SEND infrastructure for a brand-new school from day one.

Application & Safeguarding

  • Start Date: Expected early 2026, aligned with the school’s official opening.

  • Safeguarding: All appointments are subject to an enhanced DBS check, satisfactory references, and safer recruitment vetting.
