The Geological Society of London

Job Summary: Events/Training Courses Lead

Since its launch in 2021, the programme has become a cornerstone of professional development for the global geoscience community and a vital part of the Society’s financial strategy. This is a high-visibility role where you will manage the entire lifecycle of training courses—from identifying new topics with subject matter experts to ensuring “delighted” customers upon completion.

Requirements and Skills

  • Essential Experience: Proven track record in event or project management, specifically managing multiple deadlines, budgets, and schedules.

  • Commercial Acumen: Strong ability to identify market opportunities, build relationships with “big customers,” and meet annual sales targets.

  • Interpersonal Skills: Exceptional at influencing and negotiating with diverse stakeholders, including senior committees, trainers, and volunteers.

  • Tech Literacy: High level of IT proficiency, as most courses are delivered online.

  • Communication: Excellent written and oral skills to work with marketing on campaign content and report to the Professional Committee.

  • Desirable: Experience in adult education, familiarity with scientific disciplines, or a background working within a professional/learned society.

Role Overview

You will be the strategic and operational lead for the Training Course programme. Your mission is to nurture a pipeline of repeat courses while simultaneously commissioning new, innovative content that meets the needs of 12,000 global members. Working from the historic Burlington House in Piccadilly (hybrid), you will act as the bridge between the Training Course Committee and the delegates. You are responsible for the end-to-end speaker management, ensuring relationships are nurtured and documentation is accurate, all while hitting net income targets that allow the Society to thrive.

Key Responsibilities

  • Programme Ownership: Take full responsibility for the training calendar, ensuring all courses are accessible and delivered to Society standards.

  • Committee Liaison: Lead Training Course Committee meetings, set agendas, and report performance updates to the Head of Events.

  • Marketing Collaboration: Partner with the Marketing Executive to design high-quality campaigns and detailed plans to drive delegate acquisition.

  • Strategic Networking: Develop relationships with corporate customers and internal teams (like the Publishing House) to cross-promote opportunities.

  • Operational Excellence: Manage speaker relationships and ensure all logistical elements for online and in-person delivery are seamless.

Benefits & Culture

  • Salary: £37,000 – £40,000 per annum.

  • Generous Pension: 10% employer contribution.

  • Wellbeing: 24/7 online GP, mental health counselling, and a free premium Headspace account.

  • Perks: 25–30 days holiday, “Cycle to Work” scheme, and free access to Royal Academy exhibitions next door.

  • Professional Growth: Free Geological Society Fellow membership for qualified staff.
