Emergency Nurse Practitioner (Band 7)

NHS Western Isles is seeking a highly skilled and autonomous Emergency Nurse Practitioner to join the dedicated team at Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway. This is a rare opportunity to practice advanced nursing in a unique rural setting, where you will manage a diverse caseload ranging from acute emergencies to minor injuries. As an independent practitioner, you will use high-level analytical and clinical judgment skills to provide life-saving care to the island community.


Core Requirements and Skills

  • Registration: Current and appropriate NMC registration.

  • Education: Basic degree in Nursing plus a Post-graduate Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) qualification.

  • Certifications: Independent Nurse Prescriber (V300) is essential. You must be up-to-date with (or committed to completing) ALS, EPLS, and ETC/TNCC.

  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of proven experience as an ENP at Band 6 level.

  • Clinical Skills: Advanced physical assessment, high-level clinical decision-making, and the ability to work as an independent practitioner within an expanded scope of practice.

  • Teamwork: Ability to work flexibly and cooperatively within a small, dynamic, and rural multidisciplinary team.


Key Responsibilities

  • Autonomous Practice: Assess, diagnose, and treat or refer patients presenting with a wide range of undifferentiated emergency conditions and minor injuries.

  • Independent Prescribing: Utilize non-medical prescribing qualifications to provide immediate pharmacological interventions.

  • Rural Emergency Care: Manage the “unpredictable and fast-paced” nature of a rural ED, stabilizing critically ill patients for potential transfer to mainland specialist centers.

  • Quality Improvement: Lead and participate in clinical audits and quality improvement projects to maintain high standards of evidence-based practice.

  • Person-Centred Care: Ensure all treatment plans are co-produced with patients and families, maintaining a compassionate and professional approach.


Working in the Western Isles

The Emergency Department operates on a 12.5-hour shift rotation (days and nights). While the role is demanding, it offers a high degree of clinical variety and the chance to live in a community renowned for its stunning landscapes and quality of life.

  • Salary: £50,861 – £59,159 (pro rata).

  • Islands Allowance: An additional £1,406 (pro rata) Distant Islands Allowance.

  • Hours: 18 hours per week (Permanent).

  • Schedule Change: Note that as of 1/4/2026, the standard working week reduces to 36 hours, with part-time hours adjusted pro-rata.
