Hull City Council
Domestic Abuse Practitioner | Hull City Council
The Opportunity
Join the Domestic Abuse Project (DAP), a specialized team within Hull City Council dedicated to providing life-changing support and advocacy for survivors of domestic abuse. This is a high-impact opportunity for a motivated and dynamic individual to work in a “Trauma-Informed” and “Strength-Based” environment. Based at Clough Road Police Station, you will be part of a team that empowers survivors and their children to reclaim their safety and well-being. This role offers a competitive salary (up to £35,412) and is ideal for those looking to deepen their expertise in a complex, challenging, but profoundly rewarding area of community safety. With active promotion of training and development, the Council provides a supportive platform for your professional growth within the Neighbourhood and Communities Directorate.
Requirements and Experience
-
Direct Experience: Previous experience working directly with victims/survivors of domestic abuse or in safeguarding adults/children is essential.
-
Theoretical Knowledge: Understanding of the Duluth Power and Control methodologies and an awareness of power differentials and inequalities.
-
Safeguarding: An informed understanding of safeguarding children and adults is mandatory.
-
Core Skills: Effective communication, organizational skills, and the ability to work using your own initiative while collaborating with partner agencies.
-
Vetting: Subject to a satisfactory Enhanced DBS check including Children’s and Adult’s Barring Lists.
-
Genuine Occupational Requirement: This post is open to women only (Section 2 (e) of the Sex Discrimination Act applies).
The Role
As a Domestic Abuse Practitioner, you will provide victim-led advocacy and trauma-informed support to individuals referred to the DAP service. Your daily work will involve navigating complex power dynamics to empower survivors, helping them access the resources and protection they need. You will work in close partnership with the police and other agencies to ensure a coordinated response to domestic abuse. The role requires you to be both highly organized and deeply empathetic, managing a caseload of sensitive situations during standard office hours (Monday to Friday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm). Whether covering maternity leave for 30 or 37 hours a week, you will be a vital link in the city’s safety network, ensuring that survivors’ voices are heard and their safety is prioritized.
Sector Insight: The “Trauma-Informed” DNA
As you cluster this thirty-second role, notice the shift from “Compliance” to “Advocacy”:
-
Specialized Vetting: This role is uniquely based at a Police Station (HU5), requiring a higher level of inter-agency integration than your previous Social Worker or AHP roles.
-
Theoretical Frameworks: The specific requirement for knowledge of the Duluth Model distinguishes this as a specialist “Justice & Advocacy” role rather than general social care.
-
Maternity Cover Trend: Along with several other public sector roles in your dataset, this highlights the high volume of fixed-term contract (FTC) opportunities available in Hull’s local government for 2026.
