Kent County Council
Customer Support Assistant | Kent Libraries | Marden & Maidstone
Intro
Are you a friendly, outgoing person who believes that libraries are the heartbeat of a community? Kent County Council is looking for a Customer Support Assistant to join the front-of-house teams at Marden Library and the Kent History & Library Centre in Maidstone. This is a hugely rewarding role where no two days are the same. You might be helping a toddler at “Baby Rhyme Time” in the morning and assisting a senior citizen with an internet class in the afternoon. If you are passionate about people and want a role that truly makes a difference, we want to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
-
Front-of-House Excellence: Serve as the welcoming face of the library, engaging with the public and providing high-quality customer service.
-
Community Engagement: Assist in delivering library activities, including reading groups, talks, exhibitions, and digital literacy classes.
-
Operational Versatility: Undertake a diverse range of tasks from book circulation and shelving to answering complex historical or local information queries.
-
Dual-Site Support: Split your regular working hours between the village setting of Marden and the larger, specialized Kent History and Library Centre in Maidstone.
-
Independence: Confidently manage periods of lone working and adapt to working at other locations across the Maidstone district as needed.
Requirements and Skills
-
Personality: You must be friendly, approachable, and outgoing. Prior library experience is not essential—your attitude is what matters most.
-
Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills and a high command of spoken English (as per statutory duty under the Immigration Act 2016).
-
Resilience: A positive outlook and the ability to handle a busy, public-facing environment.
-
Availability: 18 hours per week, including every Saturday.
-
Compliance: This post is subject to an Enhanced DBS check.
About the Role
This position offers a unique “best of both worlds” experience. At Marden Library, you will be part of a close-knit village community, while at the Kent History & Library Centre, you will support one of the county’s major hubs for research and learning.
Modern libraries are dynamic spaces; you will be helping customers navigate digital resources just as often as physical books.
Because you will be working at the Kent History & Library Centre, you may also gain exposure to Kent’s fascinating archives and local heritage resources. KCC is committed to your growth, offering professional development and a “work that works for you” approach to flexibility.
Benefits
-
Leave: 28 days annual leave (rising to 30 after 5 years) plus bank holidays.
-
Rewards: Access to the Kent Rewards scheme for discounts and cashback.
-
Support: Comprehensive health and wellbeing support and a solid work/life balance.
-
Growth: Continuous training and professional development opportunities.
