Computing Teacher Trainee

Dulwich College

job description

Transform Your Technical Skills into a Teaching Career

Dulwich College, in partnership with the University of Roehampton, is offering a prestigious one-year teacher training programme to develop the next generation of Computing educators. Designed to address the national shortage in this critical field, this “school-based” route immerses you in the classroom from day one. You will learn from global leaders in digital education—including Professor Miles Berry—while working toward both Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). Whether you are a recent computer science graduate or a professional looking to change careers, this programme provides the elite training and financial support needed to succeed.

The Training Experience

  • Hands-On Learning: Spend four days a week in your placement school and one day at the University of Roehampton or a specialist hub school.

  • Specialist Curriculum: Benefit from 14.5 days of subject-specific training, covering the latest in computer science pedagogy, programming, and digital literacy.

  • Dual Placements: Gain a comprehensive view of the education system through two contrasting school placements within our network of partner schools.

  • Expert Mentorship: Training is designed and delivered by leading practitioners at the forefront of national and international computing policy.

Financial Support & Bursaries

This programme offers significant financial incentives for eligible candidates:

  • Tax-Free Bursary: Up to £29,000 available for the training year.

  • BCS Scholarships: More generous scholarships of £31,000 are available via the British Computer Society.

  • SKE Courses: Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses are available for those who need to brush up on their technical knowledge, often coming with an additional bursary.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Academic Background: A first- or second-class bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject (e.g., Computer Science, IT, Software Engineering).

  • Core Skills: A genuine passion for technology and a strong desire to inspire and work with young people.

  • Career Changers: We highly encourage applications from industry professionals; SKE courses can bridge the gap from your last period of formal education.

  • Safeguarding: Commitment to the welfare of children; an Enhanced DBS Disclosure will be required.
