Job Description
Use your SEND expertise to resolve complex issues as a Complaints and Tribunals Officer in Liverpool. You’ll step into a high‑impact interim role, managing a backlog of cases, improving processes and helping reduce complaints and tribunal referrals for children and young people with SEND.
Role Overview
Working primarily remotely with one on‑site day per week at the Cunard Building, you’ll provide specialist support on SEND complaints and tribunal matters. You’ll review live and historic cases, advise on risk and strategy, help clear backlogs and support the organisation to prevent future escalation wherever possible.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and progress complex SEND complaints and tribunal cases from initial referral through to resolution
- Provide expert advice on SEND law, process and best practice to caseworkers, managers and senior leaders
- Identify opportunities to reduce complaints and tribunal activity through early intervention, improved communication and robust decision‑making
- Draft high‑quality responses, statements and supporting documentation for complaints and tribunal proceedings
- Work with internal teams to prioritise and clear existing backlogs safely and efficiently
- Share learning from cases to support continuous improvement in SEND processes and culture
Person Specification
Must Have
- Proven experience handling SEND complaints and tribunal processes, ideally within a local authority or equivalent setting
- Strong knowledge of SEND legislation, statutory guidance and tribunal practice
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex issues clearly
- Ability to manage a demanding caseload, set priorities and meet tight deadlines
- High level of professionalism, discretion and resilience when dealing with sensitive cases
Nice to Have
- Previous experience in interim or consultancy roles providing short‑term turnaround support
- Background in related areas such as education law, complaints management or safeguarding
