Community Payback Supervisor (Part-Time) – Probation Service

Are you looking for a role where you can make a tangible difference in your local area? The Probation Service is seeking an empathetic and motivated Community Payback Supervisor to lead groups of People on Probation as they complete their unpaid work hours. This isn’t just about manual labor; it’s about being a mentor and leader, helping individuals pay back to society while improving the community for everyone. Whether you are clearing overgrowth to make parks safer or restoring local sports halls, you will be the driving force behind positive change.

About the Role

This is an operational, “boots-on-the-ground” role where you will directly supervise small groups for up to 7 hours a day. You will be responsible for the safety, motivation, and quality of work on-site. Because Community Payback projects are designed to accommodate the schedules of People on Probation, weekend work is a standard part of this role. You will be expected to drive service vehicles to transport both people and equipment, and you’ll often work alongside the group to demonstrate good practice and manual skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct Supervision: Leading and motivating diverse work groups of People on Probation to complete various manual tasks.

  • Skill Demonstration: Working alongside individuals to teach and demonstrate skills like building, planting, or clearing.

  • Logistics: Driving service vehicles to transport work groups and necessary equipment to various sites.

  • Site Management: Ensuring all health and safety protocols are followed and that the work meets community standards.

  • Reporting: Monitoring progress and ensuring individuals complete their assigned hours effectively.

Requirements & Mandatory Criteria

  • Manual Driving Licence: Must hold a full UK Manual Driving Licence. (Applications with automatic-only licences cannot be accepted).

  • Availability: This is a Part-Time role (22.2 hours per week). The schedule is fixed for Thursday through Saturday.

  • Weekend Working: You must be willing to work weekends as part of your normal pattern.

  • Personal Qualities: You should be an empathetic communicator who is happy to take the lead and genuinely wants to help people reform.

Salary & Benefits

  • Starting Salary: £26,475 (Pro-Rata for 22.2 hours).

  • Weekend Premium: You will be paid a higher rate of 50% extra for any weekend days worked.

  • Pay Progression: Annual progression opportunities through a Competency Based Framework (CBF).

  • Pension: Access to a high-quality Civil Service pension scheme.

  • Job Security: A meaningful career with the Probation Service offering long-term stability and growth.

Important Information for Applicants

  • Visa Sponsorship: This role is not eligible for a new Skilled Worker visa under the rules introduced on 22nd July 2025.

  • Recruitment Process: You will be assessed on two Civil Service Behaviours and one Experience-based question. In the event of high application volumes, an initial sift will be conducted on the lead behaviour.

  • Training: You will be fully supported and trained to manage the unique challenges of supervising people on probation.
