Claims Consultant

Maxim Recruitment Ltd

Construction Disputes Engineer | Legal & Claims Consultancy | Kent / London

Intro

Are you a qualified Engineer who finds the “how” of a project’s failure just as fascinating as the “how” of its construction? A leading consultancy specializing in the legal and disputes sector of the construction industry is seeking a technically minded Engineer with a unique career ambition: the desire to transition into the legal profession as a Solicitor or Barrister.

This role bridges the gap between complex site engineering and the courtroom. You will use your technical expertise to deconstruct engineering failures, delays, and contractual disputes, providing the evidentiary backbone for high-stakes legal proceedings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Forensic Engineering: Analyze technical drawings, site reports, and project schedules to identify the root causes of construction defects or project delays.

  • Expert Witness Support: Assist senior consultants and legal teams in preparing expert witness reports for litigation, adjudication, or international arbitration.

  • Claims Analysis: Evaluate “Extension of Time” (EOT) claims and loss/expense claims from a technical engineering perspective.

  • Dispute Resolution: Support the mediation process by translating complex engineering data into clear, concise evidence for legal counsel and tribunals.

  • Legal Research: Develop your understanding of construction law (JCT, NEC, FIDIC) and its application in engineering disputes.

What You’ll Bring

  • Educational Background: A degree in Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering.

  • Legal Ambition: A clear, demonstrable motive to pursue a career in law (e.g., currently studying or planning to study the GDL, SQE, or Bar Practice Course).

  • Analytical Mindset: The ability to look beyond the surface of a technical problem and understand its contractual implications.

  • Communication: Exceptional writing skills; you must be able to draft technical reports that are accessible to non-engineers (judges and solicitors).

About the Career Path

This is a rare “stepping stone” role designed for the Dual-Professional. The consultancy provides a high-pressure, intellectually stimulating environment where you will be mentored by some of the top minds in construction law.

Typically, a professional in this role will spend 2–4 years mastering the technicalities of disputes before moving into full-time legal practice. By the time you qualify as a solicitor or barrister, you will possess a “boots-on-the-ground” technical understanding that few career lawyers can match—making you an invaluable asset in the construction bar.

Benefits at a Glance

  • Salary: Competitive, reflecting the specialized nature of the role.

  • Professional Development: Direct exposure to high-value litigation and arbitration.

  • Mentorship: Guidance from dually qualified professionals (Engineers/Lawyers).

  • Sector: High-growth field of Forensic Construction Consulting.
