Civils Operative Apprenticeship

M Group Water

Apprentice Civil Engineering Operative (Water & Wastewater) – Scotland

M Group Water, a key partner in the Caledonia Water Alliance, is looking for ambitious individuals to join our pan-Scotland capital investment programme in partnership with Scottish Water. With over 140 years of engineering heritage, we don’t just maintain infrastructure; we reimagine it to safeguard water supplies for future generations. This apprenticeship is a permanent gateway into the industry, offering a “safety-first” environment where you can earn while gaining accredited qualifications and making a tangible impact on the environment.

About the Role

This is a hands-on, site-based apprenticeship within our Capital Project Delivery team. Working alongside experienced squads and a dedicated mentor, you will learn the “daily control” of construction activities. Your journey will take you from basic site assistance to managing complex tasks like installing drainage systems, forming pipeline chambers, and using precision laser leveling equipment. You’ll be at the heart of SR21—a massive six-year investment programme—learning to deliver essential water infrastructure on time, on budget, and to the highest quality standards.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Infrastructure Installation: Learning to install wastewater pipes, ironworks (access covers), and ancillary structures.

  • Technical Skills: Interpreting site drawings and using a variety of power tools, compactor plates, and laser leveling equipment.

  • Groundworks: Measuring and cutting geo-membranes, forming excavations, and reinstating surfaces to road-base standards.

  • Concrete Work: Placing, compacting, and finishing concrete for slabs, footings, and paths.

  • Site Safety: Installing temporary protection, barriers, and safety lighting, while acting as a Banksman for site vehicles.

  • Plant Operation: Training to operate various site plant and construction vehicles safely.

What You’ll Bring

  • Academic Baseline: Ideally a basic level of numeracy and literacy (you will be supported to achieve Functional Skills Level 1 if needed).

  • Manual Dexterity: A high degree of coordination and comfort using hand and power tools.

  • Outdoor Enthusiasm: A genuine desire to work outside in various weather conditions on active construction sites.

  • Mobility: A full UK or EU Driving Licence is required (or must be passed by September 1st, 2026).

  • Attitude: A commitment to safety, a respectful team-player mindset, and an eagerness to learn through the Apprenticeship Development Scheme (ADS).
